Wine Dinner 2/17

 Wine Dinner 2/17/24

A whole group of us who take the wine class did a potluck for a wine dinner!
I am in the back row wearing  green :)

First Course: Riesling with Polish food

Heidemanns Bergweiler Blitz Riesling: The first wine on the roster was a Riesling from Germany. It was acidic and crisp with an apple bite.

Food: This was paired with Polish Pierogi and Kielbasa sausage and caramelized onions, all sautéed in butter.
This paired well all together the white with the starch.

Rating: 7/10  I thought the hints of apple in the wine was good but a little odd with the sausage.

Second Course: Salmon Wellington and Italian Red Wine

Cantele Salice Salentino: The variety was  Negroamaro. It smelled sweet with acids the smell hits my nostrils with a punch. It was thick, sweet, and smoky. I tasted hints of cherry. A very good wine

Food: This wine was paired with salmon wellington with a red wine sauce. It was delicious to enjoy sips of a smooth wine with the fish.

Rating: 8/10 So Good!
Dessert: Port with a chocolate mousse

Henriques and Henriques Madeira: 5 year aged Tawny port. Tasted like raisins and molasses/honey.

Food: decadent chocolate mousse.

Rating:  5/10 I did not like the taste of the port and it made the chocolate mousse taste sweeter. I think a berry dessert would have tasted better with this port.

Such a fun time with wine and friends!

Winery Review: A round but juicy taste with hints of blackberry and cinnamon.

Wine Folly: pg 88. Cross between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Hints of black cherry, black currant, cedar, baking spices, and graphite.

My Review: This wine had an overpowering cinnamon taste. It smelled bitter and was a very bold and robust wine. It paired well with bread. I liked it for the price.

Wine Folly: pg. 96 Has notes of yellow apple, starfruit, pineapple, vanilla, and butter.

Tasting- El Parador Navarra Rosado

 Name: El Parador Navarra Rosado
Variety: Garnacha
Region: Navarra
Country: Spain
Year: 2021
Price: $15.00

Winery Review: Vivid strawberry color with intense fruity aromas. The wine is fruity and fresh.

Wine Folly: pg 117.  Grenache wine should have notes of stewed strawberry, grilled plum, leather, dried herbs, and blood orange.

My Review: This wine was interesting. I was expecting it to be sweet because it is a rose but it was dry. The wine smelled super sweet but was: tangy, tart and dry. I had this with bread. This was not my favorite.

Wine Folly: pg 120. Gruner Veltliner is an uncommon variety mostly grown in Austria. Makes and ideal palate cleanser. Should have notes of apple, pear, asparagus, white pepper and flint,

My Review: The adjectives I would use to describe this wine is crispy apple with a white peppery taste. Sweet but dry at the same time. It was tangy, peppery and smooth. I had garlic bread with this wine. It was one of my favorites so far! I would buy it again!
